家を初めて訪ねると When you visit at friend
アメリカで行われているように，Scandinaviaでは(も)，初めて家を訪ねてきたお客様に各部屋を案内することが，ほぼ同然のように行われている．親しいお客様で，初めて訪問してもらった場合には，客間だけでなく，自分たちのプライベートルームまで見せる．「ここがベットルームで，こちらがお風呂場ですよっ:)」
When you visit your friend's house for the first time, it is often true that what your friends do is to show every room. Here is our bed-room, and there is our bath room...., which you would experience less in Japan. I used to think "Oh, Scandinavians / Americans / Europeans are so much loving their wonderdul places, furniture and arrangements thye made"
日本では，あまり見かけない習慣だと何となく思っていたのだけれど，実は日本では家に友人を招かないという状況が根本にあるからだと気づいた．見かけない習慣，というより，友人の家に行くという状況が少ない．
I kind of thought we, Japanese, don't show rooms to guests, as we don't have such a custom or not proud of showing around. As you know, we are in the culture of shame. [nakane?]
Wait a minutes. Maybe, not because we don't like to show our place but because we don't invite firends to home. It is a quite reasonable conclusion, isn't it?
一方，Scandinaviaでもアメリカでも，人に見せることが前提となって，室内をデザインしているように思う．特に家庭的でもない(失礼！)学生の家であっても，壁には素敵な絵画がかかっているのには，事情を知らない時には，驚かされたもの．日本の学生の四畳半からイメージする洋服が積み重なっている部屋はなかなか見かけない．(だから，気をつけてください．アメリカ人，ヨーロッパ人の彼氏彼女の家に絵画が飾られていたとしても，直接彼らが家庭的，室内アレンジが上手，とは限らないのです)
Different from Japanese houses, or Japanese attitude toward houses, Scandinavians' and Americans' houses are designed to be shown. People expect to have guests. So in the end, even such studens who are not care a bit about arranging rooms, tend to better designed rooms than ordinary Japanese guys who has one room piled with clothes, and an entrance filled with garbage... We see nice drawnings on the wall, cozy atomosphere with candles at Scandinavians'.
何はともあれ，特に冬の長いスカンジナビアでは，家に時間とお金をかけるという傾向は，「人に見せるからきれいにする」という理由以外の他の理由も強いのは確かでしょう．
Well, still it is true that Scandinavians who need to survive long winter in good shape tend to spent much time and money on their sacred areas. Which might be stronger reason than the reason I showed. (But I still think they are, at least a bit, proud of showing how they arrenge their sanctuary:)
